Faculty Student Advisers are one of the indispensable pillars in forming HKU’s academic advising system. Their first-hand experience as an advisee made peer advising an effective and influential source of support to first-year students. In order to equip our Student Advisers with the fundamental knowledge and advising skills to perform their duty for this academic year (2022-23), a series of Faculty based training workshops were conducted via either ZOOM or face-to-face format.
We were most grateful for the support from Faculties and the Counselling and Person Enrichment Section of CEDARS in making these sessions vibrant and comprehensive. These sessions also provide a platform for Student Advisers to know and connect with one another, knowing that they are not alone through discussion of challenging advising scenarios that they might face and the introduction of various campus resources available to support them. Other topics such as information about university regulations, roles of student advisers, maintaining healthy boundaries as well as active listening techniques were also covered. This year, we produced a new souvenir to express our appreciation to the service of Student Advisers and it was well received by the community.
