Integrating Online Advising Experience to Enrich Student Advising Skills

About the Workshop
Over the past semesters, online T & L has presented enormous challenges to test teachers’ ability to deliver effective advising and support to students in a flexible, creative and engaging manner. With improving situation of COVID 19 in Hong Kong, the University will soon return to face-to-face T&L. In consideration of this, AASO has organized this workshop for academic and academic-related staff, who support and advise students in learning, to review and integrate the useful skills accumulated in online teaching into the advising practices as the University moves forward to a “new normal” beyond the pandemic.
Post-workshop Highlights
This Zoom workshop brought together teachers, academic-related staff from different Faculties, CEDARS, representatives of residential colleges and other offices to share advising experience and exchange views on how to better support students.
We were very grateful to have the following speakers sharing with us their experience as Faculty Academic Advisers on topics pertaining to engaging and supporting individual students through academic advising:
“Supporting Advisees to Develop Time Management Strategies” ~ by Dr. Elizabeth Barrett, Assistant Dean (Learning & Teaching), Faculty of Education
“Engaging Advisees by Giving Structure to Academic Advising” ~by Dr. Tom Barry, Programme Director of the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences
“Guiding Advisees by Co-developing Feasible Action Plans” ~ Dr. Olivia Leung, Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning), HKU Business School
Not only did the three speakers share with us a lot of practical tips and good practices, but they also gave us many insights on how to appreciate students’ uniqueness and supporting them to achieve their academic goals. Apart from the three speakers, we were happy to have Dr. Linda Yeung, Director of Counselling and Person Enrichment, CEDARS, to give participants an updated record of the support for students with SEN and the mental health resources both within and beyond campus.
