Bridging the gap between secondary education and university learning is a big challenge for most year one students. With the release of semester one results in January, it is an opportune time for FAAs to conduct a review with their advisees to fortify their “first-sem” experience and keep their momentum going into the second half of the academic year.

Co-develop Action Plans – “Guide and Inspire” – Supporting Your Advisees in the Second Semester

During advising sessions, the Faculty Academic Adviser and advisee may discuss many issues, but how many of them would eventually be actioned upon? What can you do together with your advisee to strengthen her/his ownership of the action plan and, at the same time, feeling confident and motivated to carry it out?

In one AASO workshop, Dr. Olivia Leung (Faculty Academic Adviser, Business School) shared on how she guided and supported her advisees to develop appropriate action plans. While this may be a common practice for some Faculty Academic Advisers, some of her insightful suggestions are highlighted below:

bullet point
Guide your advisees to Identify the gap between where they want to be and where they are now
bullet point
Help them prioritize their goals and identify means to achieve them
bullet point
Set them on a positive footing by reminding them what they already have achieved and the available resources around them
bullet point
Let advisees make their own plan which is doable so that they would carry it out
bullet point
Let them choose and respect their feelings
bullet point
Allow your advisees flexibility as long as their direction is right
bullet point
Setbacks are just calls for changes to their plan, and NOT failure

Listen and give feedback to help your advisees understand that process may be more important than result. Every step they take is a part of their self-discovery.
