In 2004, the late Madame Christabel Chu Tsuk-Lim left a legacy to the University upon her passing. The “Y S and Christabel Lung Scholarship” was established in her memory and in that of her late husband, Professor Y S Lung, who taught at Department of Mechanical Engineering until his retirement in 1972.

The Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Engineering Faculty and the Medical Faculty on the basis of their outstanding academic achievements. With this Scholarship, students’ financial burden may be alleviated such that they can devote themselves to their studies and prepare for future challenges.

These two faculties held a very special meaning for the couple. Madame Christabel Chu was a medical student at HKU in 1940 but had to give up her studies due to the war. Although her dreams of entering the medical field were denied her, Madame Chu’s creative talents lead to change of career and she became a successful fashion designer with her own evening gown shop. At a time when the city was growing and expanding, Professor YS Lung guided generations of young engineers as a professor with HKU’s Mechanical Engineering Department until his retirement as Reader.
