Scholarships is a meaningful way to honour loved and respected ones whom you want to pay tribute in memory.

The late Dr Esther Cheung 張美君 (1958-2015) was one of the University’s most beloved teachers and a leading figure in Hong Kong’s cultural studies. She pioneered the filmmaker-in-residence scheme, which was first set up in the Department of Comparative Literature and later adopted by HKU as the University Artists Scheme.

An intellectual scholar and inspiring teacher, Dr Cheung’s work has left an outstanding legacy and touched the lives of many members of the HKU Family. “And this is how I remember her, as someone who refused to be daunted or discouraged by obstacles in her way, who took life on with confidence and a sense of humour,” said Professor Ackbar Abbas, Honorary Professor of the Department of Comparative Literature.

In memory of Dr Cheung, her husband Professor Thomas Au, together with her contemporaries, families and friends, pledged to establish the Esther MK Cheung Memorial Prize for Undergraduate Students and the Esther MK Cheung Memorial Prize for Postgraduate Students. It is hoped that the awardees of the Prizes will be inspired by her remarkable example and exemplify her spirit.
