Mr Yu Pang-lin (余彭年), a renowned philanthropist from the Mainland, donated approximately HK$16 million last year establishig the Yu Pang Lin Scholarships to support local and non-local students of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and three other universities: The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Over 50 Taiwanese students from the four universities benefited from the above Scholarships. Recently Mr Yu shared his vision with the Taiwanese students from HKU and CUHK, saying “I am putting the support of education as my first priority. In the years ahead I will keep contributing to institutions in Hong Kong, the Mainland and Taiwan”.

Charles Cheng Ming-Hai, one of the scholarship recipients and founding Chairman of the Taiwanese Students’ Association said, “We are deeply grateful to Mr Yu for his support, in HKU we can experience a vibrant study life and got the opportunity to promote the culture of our beautiful island to students from around the world through the ‘Taiwan Culture Night’ (台灣文化之夜). The event was a great success and attracted over 400 participants“.

“We also learnt from Mr Yu’s generosity about the notion of ‘paying forward’, and it inspired us to contribute to society even while we are still students. I therefore took service trips to Sichuan, Nepal and Thailand to help people in need,” said Amber Lin Yueh-Chuen, another scholarship awardee.
