A Hong Kong merchant decided to give back to the community by establishing a scholarship for Nigerian students to study at HKU. The donor, who named the scholarship after his father, has conducted business in Nigeria for many years. His wish is to support young people from the African nation and broaden their horizons.

The first recipient of the Hon Ping Entrance Scholarship for Nigerian Students is Honour Olatunji, who is now a Year 1 student in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

“Studying abroad was once a dream far beyond reach for me. Back in Nigeria, we need to worry about basics like electricity. I feel so privileged to be granted this scholarship. It has opened up many great opportunities which I would have never imagined before and I have the chance to meet people from different cultures.”

Born into a Christian family of six in Nigeria, he is the first in his family to study abroad. Before HKU, he attended United World College of Changshu, China for matriculation on another scholarship.
