The University of Hong Kong conferred an honorary degree upon Dr Li Dak-Sum at the 197th Congregation in March this year. An honorary degree is the highest accolade the University can bestow on a person, and is given in recognition of distinguished commitment to the University, and valuable contributions to society and the world.
A renowned businessman, Dr Li has achieved distinction not only through his successful career but also through his generous philanthropic endeavours. Over the years, he has given particular attention to young people and helping them to achieve their academic dreams by supporting education in Hong Kong and on the Chinese Mainland.
Apart from his $100 million donation to establish “The “Dr Li Dak-Sum Research Centre, The University of Hong Kong – Karolinska Institutet Collaboration in Regenerative Medicine”, Dr Li donated three HK$100 million leadership gifts to The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for the establishment of the Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Kenneth Li Scholarship in 2016. Named after Dr Li, his wife, and his grandson, this scholarship aims to nurture young talents who graduate from Ning Po College or Ning Po No. 2 College and provide them with the opportunity to achieve their aspirations.
The first batch of first-year scholars who received a “Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Kenneth Li Scholarship” was honoured to be able to give their heartiest congratulations to their generous benefactor and share his joy at the Congregation.
